Wroughtons Abandoned Care Home

Dannah House, Wroughton’s abandoned care home, was the second location we ventured to on our urban exploration journey. This visit had a specific purpose—we were there to capture footage for a friend’s college assignment, helping create a music video.

What we expected to be a simple abandoned house turned out to be far more fascinating than we had imagined.

Dannah House

Located in Wroughton, Wiltshire, was a private residential care home accommodating up to 24 residents over the age of 65, including individuals with dementia. The facility featured 22 single rooms and one double room, with six offering en-suite facilities. Residents had access to communal areas such as an open-plan lounge, dining room, and conservatory

In November 2006, the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) evaluated Dannah House, assigning many areas the lowest rating of "poor" and others as "adequate." Identified issues included insufficient staffing, the presence of asbestos in bedrooms, and a lack of privacy for residents. Despite statutory requirements set by inspectors, necessary improvements were not implemented, reportedly due to financial constraints. Consequently, the home was closed by court order in June 2007.

Following its closure, the building remained vacant and fell into disrepair. Urban explorers have documented the site's deterioration, noting overgrown gardens, decaying interiors, and personal belongings left behind. Plans to demolish the structure and construct a new care home were proposed in 2011, but it's unclear if these plans were approved.

A whistle-blower in 2012 claimed that the owner prioritized profit over resident care, leading to below-standard services. However, specific details about the owner, including their identity and any legal actions taken against them, are not publicly available. While some reports suggest that the manager was arrested, there is no verifiable information regarding any charges or legal proceedings.
